While employed at Action Manufacturing we took on the project of designing and pitching a new, more efficient and user friendly cargo delivery vehicle. This project was taken forward with TNT Australia with the intention of replacing their current ‘box body’ vehicle fleet.
My role was lead designer, working directly with TNT to design and develop a vehicle fit for purpose which attended to the drivers needs and work flow. This consisted of in-depth user research and understanding environment, vehicle and driver. Part of this included travelling to Melbourne to see TNT’s new cargo sorting facility where these vehicles would be used.
After developing the concept in 2D and 3D CAD, we went on to build three prototypes which each went on trial in different parts of Australia - which overall were a huge success. Since moving on from Action, the design for TNT has been developed further by the team following the prototype trial - however the user research, overall design concept and innovative design features I developed can still be seen in the vehicle today. These include; an aerodynamic exterior shape designed to reduce fuel consumption, a focus on easy unobtrusive movement from the cab to the rear cargo area and side exit, adaptable and flexible rear storage specific to TNT’s driver and facility requirements. There were many great design innovations which came from this project and I am sure many more developments will be made in the future.
